Hello!

Here is a printable guide accessed from American Geriatrics Society (AGS) regarding potentially inappropriate medication use in older adults ages 65+, called Beers Criteria. It’s a great resource I utilize when working with my clients and patients. The list is updated periodically, with the last update occurring in 2015 by the AGS. Beers Criteria is a great resource and reference for older adults regarding medications that can be potentially inappropriate for use. This is especially important for decreasing risks for falls and limiting adverse drug effects, which could lead to a harmful impact on an individuals health. Hope you find it useful!

Resistance Bands for Your Exercise Routine

Hello PTW Community!!

Are any of you like me and sometimes are too busy with life responsibilities to make it to the gym? Or do you travel for work and need a way to workout? Or do you not want to invest a lot of money to buy hand weights to use at home? Or do you have limited space in your home and not able to store a rack of dumbbells or an exercise machine? Are you in physical therapy or has your physical therapist given you a home exercise program that requires the use of resistance bands?

If you answered ‘YES’ to any of these questions, then this resistance band kit may be an excellent fit for you!! I decided to give these resistance bands a try since I wanted to have an inexpensive way to progress my resistance training within my home workout space for both upper and lower body. My current work and family time has limited how often I can go out to the gym, so I typically use my home exercise space to complete my workout. Having access to resistance bands that are easy to interchange for adding or subtracting weight level and being able to use the resistance bands for various exercises with different attachments made it an excellent fit for my fitness needs.

Low Back Pain: A Quick Tip for Improving Restful Sleep

Hello!

Are you experiencing low back pain? Is your back pain keeping you awake at night or just not able to get comfortable? Are you waking up throughout the night or cannot seem to get restful sleep?

Well, you are not alone! Low back pain a common ailment that can be debilitating and persistent.  A common finding, I hear from my patients, as a physical therapist, is their low back pain keeps them awake at night or they just cannot get comfortable. Being active creatures, our bodies are always moving or positioned in various ways throughout the day until we settle down to sleep, that is usually the time our brain starts to focus on our body and pain.

I want to share with you a couple of sleep positions that may be beneficial and help decrease some of the stress on your lower back:

Physical therapy has been shown to be an effective way of treating low back pain and getting individuals back to the lifestyle they desire. Also, if you are experiencing night pain please consult a healthcare professional to rule out other medical conditions.
